Well, now that Rocko is a reformed Evil OverLord and is sweet as he can be, he gets sick.
We started noticing he kept tilting his head and was having a tough time keeping his balance, so he was dropped off with Dr. Jack yesterday. They ran some blood work and found that his calcium/phosphorus levels are completely backwards. His calcium count was 6 and phosphorus was at 16!
I am learning that this is due to him being on a carnivore diet. Apparently Savannahs are omnivores. I never knew this. So they are giving him meds to try to bring his calcium levels up to 12 and lower his phosphorus levels down to 6 to see if that fixes the neuro issues.

If anyone knows where I can find some good published work on savs, please let me know. It seems that monitors all get clumped into the carnivore catagory, but in actuality, savs are the exception to this rule. They need mostly vegetation to stay healthy.

Yeah, and apparently, thats the problem. Sav owners aren't given the proper information about their dietary needs. Obesity has become almost epidemic with these guys because owners are told they're carnivores when they aren't. An all protien diet leads to the obesity issues, which cause liver and kidney problems.

I'm going to call the vet and see how he's doing. I miss my big 'ole goofball!

Well, I'm flattered you think I knew but, honestly, I'm just not that bright. LOL
Feel free to "state the obvious" at any point. You won't hurt my feelings! Especially if its an issue you see with one of the "kids."
And believe me, I will announce publicly any screw up I've done. If for no other reason, to try to help someone else that may be making the same mistake.
I figure, we're human and if you hide the mistakes, no one has a chance to learn anything, ya know?

Glad to hear that Rocko's back home. Have his neurological problems resolved?

Good luck with the diet change! Introducing new foods is so difficult, once an animal has become hooked on less healthy food choices. I imagine it would be like taking away our cheeseburgers and pizza and offering us tofu!

I was going to call the vet about this, but maybe ya'll know, is there a difference between meat and veggie protiens? Or is protien, protien?

I'm not sure but I would guess a protien is a protien either way?

well, savannahs are actually more like scavengers, but most definately meat eaters, i have seen them chow down on snakes, snails, cat/dog foog, etc. cooked ground meat is ok, but canned dog food contains all the veggie stuff in it. the weight issue is real simple, dont feed them everyday, it may sound cruel, but nature isnt exactly nice either. they dont get to eat everyday in the wild, and if your gonna keep a pet, you should do your best to simulate wild conditions, (within reason) simply feeding less everyday, will help with that weight issue. also, live prey is always good, espeacially if they have to chase down a mouse, gives em a little exercise
